"Where Are You From?": Racism and the Normalization of Whiteness in Iceland

Within European and Nordic contexts, scholars have disputed how to understand racism racialization in a context historically different from the American one. While analysis below underlines global characteristics thus mobility of racist discourse, article seeks show classifications are understood localities. The primary data consists interviews with fifteen adults who identified as mixed, terms both origin. shows that Icelandic is strongly normalized White identity, body always assumed be “white.” Thus, by definition, “non-white” bodies must somewhere else.
